Work from Home Parent

Being a work from home parent can be tough at times. She or he has to run a business and while at the same time taking care of her or his family.

If you're a work from home parent, then chances are you'll be dealing with both work and family under one roof and can get a bit difficult.

Here are a few steps to help you and other work from home parents successfully do the balancing act.

Rule No. 1: Designate a Room For Your Office

As a work at home parent, this is one of the most important rules you should follow. Yes, your house is your home, but it's also is your office, so how do you separate the two?

By designating a specific area of your house that will serve as your office. It doesn't even have to be a room. A work from home parent can still get work done, even if he or she only has a table and a computer for an office.

However, you need to make sure that that section of the house is off-limits when you're working. If your goal is to be a successful work from home parent, then you need to set out some boundaries and this is an important one.

Rule No. 2: Maintain Office Hours

A successful work at home parent will be prepared to spend a portion of their time and effort operating their business. Therefore, it's important to set aside a specific time that is devoted solely to making money with your business.

Let your family know there are certain times of the day when you have to work without disturbances. You should inform your friends exactly what your office hours are so they won't disturb you as well. This way, you, as work from home parent, won't be constantly having to take time away from your work in order to accommodate the rest of the household.

Rule No. 3: Phone Etiquette

If you're a work from home parent running your own home-based business, then you will likely receive important business calls at home. Make it clear to your family that no one but you answers your business line. Most phones these days have a mute button, thanks to technology, especially when the baby is crying and you're on the phone talking to an important client.

Rule No. 4: Have A Routine

Your work from home work to will go a lot smoother if you set and maintain a specific routine. Routines may seem boring at times, but that something you'll just have to deal with if you want to succeed. Rituals or routines such as dropping the kids off at the daycare before going onto work are important.

Even if you're a work from home parent and you don't leave the house to go to work, it's might be a good idea to say "I'm home" when you're done for the day and say "I'm back for a bit" when you're taking a break. This lets your kids know when you can and can't be interrupted.
