Work from Home Insurance
Technology advancements and the Internet have been a part of the current boom in the work from home and telecommuting sectors. Work from home opportunities are experiencing rapid growth with many people getting on the bandwagon because of the benefits offered. There are current estimates that 43 million or so home businesses are now operating. Work from Home Insurance vs. Homeowner's Policy Unfortunately, too many people who setup a work from home business don't think to add work from home insurance coverage. They reason that, since they already have homeowner's policies, what's the point of work from home insurance as well? It's true that homeowner's policies do have some coverage, but what's offered is limited compared to what work from home insurance covers. If you have a work from home business, or if you have a home-based career, this is what a homeowner's policy covers: • $2,500 for home office equipment
and inventory in your home Something you should consider when searching for work from home insurance is liability coverage. If you only have a homeowner's policy, there is absolutely no liability coverage offered for your work from home business to protect you someone is injured while doing business with you in your home. Thus you'll have to pay any damages awarded, including lawyer's and other legal fees in case of a lawsuit whereby the court rules against you. Work from Home Insurance Coverage Options As a work from home business owner, you're probably going to need even more coverage. Work from home insurance gives you additional options to help you protect yourself better, including your earnings, and your home-based business. However, if you'd rather not purchase a separate policy to go with the one you already have, there is another option. What You Can Do With Your Homeowner's Policy There are two endorsements that you can add to your current homeowner's policy in order to turn it into a regular work from home insurance. You can add a business pursuits endorsement to your work from home insurance if you don't own your own home business but sometimes do business from home. If you own the business, consider the permitted incidental occupancies endorsement. This will give your work from home insurance much wider property coverage, and add much needed liability coverage for your business. Getting Work from Home Insurance Coverage for your Home-Based Business You can also consider a separate work from home insurance for your home business. In addition to your homeowner's insurance, you can also buy a separate policy. Your agent can answer any questions you have about what type of work at home insurance you should consider. Ask your agent about a BOP (Business
Owner's Package) if you prefer to have a separate work form home insurance
policy. Your insurance agent should be able to put together a special
policy that's specific to your business needs.
