Credit Repair Scams
from: Home Biz AdvisorFor those unfortunate majority who have to incur huge debts and unable to pay off loans within the stipulated time, thereby losing out properties they had mortgaged, debt elimination schemes comes as a great relief. Generally these are websites or organizations advertising in a legal way to dispose of mortgage loans and credit card debts.
These organizations arrange for you to pay debts through a Debt Management Plan (DMP). In a DMP, you deposit money each month with the organization. All the particulars of your loan information and a special power of attorney, authorizing the agency to enter into transactions regarding the title of your property pledged, are to be furnished.
The organization then pays your credit card bills, loans and other unsecured debts according to a payment schedule they've worked out with you and your creditors. In the exchange, you're required to pay a certain percentage of the value of the satisfied debts to the organization. Some points to be noted when choosing a DMP:
* Select one that offers a range of services, including budget counseling, savings and debt management training and presence of trained counselors who are certified in handling consumer credits. These counselors should discuss your entire financial situation with you and help you develop a personalized plan to solve your present money problems and also avoid others in future. Avoid organizations that push a debt management plan without offering any counseling services.
* Some charge high fees without disclosing to you about the cost and nature of the services they offer and they may even urge you to make voluntary contributions that can force you into more debt. Some even lie about their nonprofit status.
* There were instances where some organizations that offer DMPs have themselves deceived consumers. It's recommended that you check their bills regularly to ensure that the creditors are getting paid according to your plan.
* Confirm with your creditors that they've accepted your plan before making payments to the DMP. Creditors may reduce interest rates or give-up some fees if you are paying back through a DMP.
* As you are providing all of your personal information to the DMP, the risk of identity theft related crimes are greatly minimized if you exercise caution while choosing a DMP.
Importantly, it's up to you to make regular, timely payments.
