Protect Your Online Identity

from: Home Biz Advisor

As theft of online identity is quite rampant on the net, it becomes inevitable to take preventive measures and safeguard against your identity being accidentally disclosed to or intentionally stolen by unscrupulous people.

Specifically designed software packages have been developed which allows you to do anonymous surfing, encrypts transmissions to and from your computer to shield you from the most sophisticated methods of online spying along with anti-spyware software to detect and remove spyware programs.

Steps to Be Taken If You Feel Your Online Identity Has Been Stolen:

* Immediately close all credit card accounts which has been hacked into.

* In case your social security number is stolen then immediately inform one of the three nationwide consumer reporting agencies, Equifax, Experian or TransUnion and place a fraud alert on your credit reports.

* Regularly monitor your credit report and waiting for the monthly bills to arrive.

* Ask your financial institution for tips about dealing with the effects on bank or brokerage accounts.

* Immediately cancel and ask to replace any stolen drivers licenses or other identification documents and request the same to be notified in your file.

* Watch for tell tale signs of identity thefts such as late or missing bills which means the thief has taken over your account and changed your billing address to cover his tracks, receiving credit cards that you didn't apply for, being denied credit or offered less favorable terms for no apparent reason or getting contacted by debt collectors or others about purchases you didn't make or even inquiries from companies you didn't contact.

* Don't let the Phishers crack your password. Refrain using your mother's maiden name, your birth date, your Social Security number or your phone number or a series of consecutive numbers.

* If you suspect your identity has been misused, then immediately report it to the police and also with the Federal Trade Commission at www.consumer.gov/idtheft.

Protecting your own identity is one hell of an experience for those who work online. By the time they get aware of these menaces they'll unfortunately have suffered. But take good care of your identity as it doesn't just damage your computer, unlike hoaxes or viruses, but your career itself.
